Haryana Minister Sandeep Singh Resigns from Sports Portfolio Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations
Haryana Sports Minister Sandeep Singh has stepped down from his portfolio following a sexual harassment and criminal intimidation case registered by the Chandigarh police. A junior athletics coach lodged the complaint against him on Friday. Singh has denied the allegations, calling them an attempt to tarnish his reputation.
“There is an attempt to spoil my image. I hope for a thorough investigation into the false allegations. I hand over the responsibility of the Sports department to the Chief Minister until the investigation report is released,” Singh stated.
The complainant, who spoke at a press conference hosted by the opposition party Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), accused Singh of harassing her from February to November last year. She claimed he sent her repeated messages on social media, touched her inappropriately, and threatened her. She ultimately had to leave social media due to the harassment.
The coach revealed that Singh first contacted her on Instagram after seeing her at a gym. “He messaged me on Instagram, saying my national games certificate was pending and wanted to meet regarding it,” she said. “Unfortunately, my certificate was misplaced by my federation, and I have been following up with the authorities.”
She agreed to meet him at his residence-cum-camp office with her documents, where she alleged he engaged in sexual misconduct.
Sandeep Singh, a BJP MLA from Pehowa in Kurukshetra, is a professional field hockey player and former captain of the Indian national hockey team. His life inspired the 2018 biopic “Soorma,” in which Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh portrayed him.
