A family in a prolonged marital dispute has alleged that their estranged daughter-in-law forcefully re-entered their home after a settlement agreement worth ₹13 lakh fell apart. The father of the husband shared his ordeal, stating that the daughter-in-law had been living with her mother for three years before returning unannounced and creating turmoil.
Background of the Dispute
The couple got married on October 31, 2017. However, the daughter-in-law left her matrimonial home on February 20, 2018, and filed multiple cases against her in-laws under Section 498A of the IPC, the Domestic Violence Act, and Maintenance laws.
The husband’s father stated that the girl’s family had agreed to a ₹13 lakh settlement, with two cheques for ₹6.5 lakh each ready for court submission. However, the daughter-in-law’s mother allegedly demanded an additional ₹20,000, causing the settlement to fall through.
The father-in-law added, “Now, they want us to sell our home and give her a one-fifth share. If I sell the house, where will we go?”
Accusations of Harassment
On February 28, 2021, the daughter-in-law returned to her in-laws’ home, sat outside, and allegedly threw stones before entering the house. She locked herself inside with her mother-in-law and sister-in-law, while the husband and his father had to vacate due to fear of false accusations.
For the past 18 days, the family claims they have sought police intervention, but no action has been taken. The father-in-law explained, “She leaves water tanks open and blames us for harassment. We’ve been careful to avoid her traps, only sending food upstairs through my sister.”
Neighbors Speak Out
Several neighbors supported the family, describing them as decent and accusing the daughter-in-law of false allegations. One elderly neighbor claimed the girl’s family had already taken money before the marriage and spent minimally on the wedding.
Conflicting Statements from the Girl’s Family
The daughter-in-law’s mother initially supported the ₹13 lakh settlement but later stated she wanted her daughter to live in her in-laws’ house. She accused the husband of being physically unfit and questioned why the family refused to seek medical treatment for him.
When asked why her daughter should live with a man she deemed unfit, the mother reiterated her demand for medical treatment, leading to further confusion.
Conclusion
This ongoing dispute highlights the complexities of marital and financial disagreements, with allegations from both sides. As the case unfolds in court, the truth behind these claims will likely emerge.
