During a virtual event celebrating International Women’s Day, Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana highlighted the importance of giving preference to women for panel advocate roles. He stressed that this initiative would increase women’s visibility in courtrooms and help bridge the gender gap in the legal profession.
Addressing Gender Imbalance in Law
CJI Ramana acknowledged that women lawyers often face societal pressures that force them to leave the legal profession. He underlined the need for a supportive environment that enables women to pursue careers in law without obstacles.
The Chief Justice also shared alarming statistics:
- India has nearly 17 lakh lawyers, but only 15% of them are women.
- To address this imbalance, 3 of the 9 recent appointments to the Supreme Court were women judges.
Why Women’s Representation Matters
CJI Ramana emphasized that women’s contributions to the legal field go beyond symbolism. He stated that women bring unique perspectives to the law, which are essential for a more balanced judiciary.
A Call for Change
The Chief Justice expressed his commitment to empowering women in law, stating:
“If giving women their due share is a revolution, I am proud to be called a revolutionary.”
CJI Ramana’s remarks reflect a growing movement toward gender equality in the legal profession and aim to inspire systemic change.
