A father-in-law recently shared a troubling situation where his daughter-in-law forced her way back into their home after a Rs 13 lakh settlement fell through. His son got married on October 31, 2017, but the daughter-in-law left for her parents’ house on February 20, 2018. She subsequently filed three cases against her in-laws under Section 498A, the Domestic Violence Act, and for maintenance.
Initially, her mother agreed to a Rs 13 lakh settlement, and the father-in-law prepared two cheques of Rs 6.5 lakh each. However, the settlement didn’t proceed when her mother suddenly demanded an additional Rs 20,000. The situation worsened as their demands grew, including wanting the in-laws to sell their home and give the daughter-in-law a fifth of the share. The father-in-law expressed concern, asking, “If we sell this house, where will we go?”
On February 28, 2021, after living with her parents for three years, the daughter-in-law unexpectedly returned and sat outside her in-laws’ home. When the father-in-law went to the market, she allegedly threw stones, threatened the family, and forced her way inside. Since then, she has locked herself inside with her mother-in-law and sister-in-law, while the father-in-law and his son have been living separately due to fears of new false cases. The father-in-law is staying with his elder brother, and his son has rented an apartment.
For 18 days, the family has sought help from the police, but no assistance has been provided. The father-in-law fears being falsely accused again if he tries to enter the house. He explained how his daughter-in-law leaves water tanks open and then accuses the family of harassment when the water runs out. The family has been delivering food to the women trapped inside, but the daughter-in-law records videos, attempting to create further accusations.
Neighbors have come forward to support the family, stating that the cases are false. They claim the family has lived peacefully in the area for 30 years and believe the situation is driven by money. One neighbor mentioned that the daughter-in-law left her husband, claiming he was physically unfit. Another elderly neighbor noted that her family contributed only Rs 4 lakh during the marriage but is now demanding over Rs 13 lakh.
When journalists questioned the daughter-in-law’s mother about the Rs 13 lakh demand, she alleged that her son-in-law was impotent. She claimed that when her daughter informed the in-laws, they suggested remaining friends and adopting a child. The mother questioned why the family wouldn’t seek medical treatment for their son.
Later, the mother changed her stance, stating they no longer wanted the Rs 13 lakh. Instead, she insisted that her daughter should continue living in the in-laws’ house. When asked why she wanted her daughter to live with a man she claimed was physically unfit, the mother insisted that he should seek medical treatment.
