India’s First Child-Friendly Family Court Inaugurated in Kerala
The first child-friendly Family Court in India was inaugurated in Kerala’s Kozhikode district on Wednesday. Named “Swapnakoodu” (Nest of Dreams), this new court aims to create a supportive and less stressful environment for children involved in custody and matrimonial cases.
The Kozhikode Family Court is a joint initiative by the Calicut Judiciary and the Calicut Bar Association Committee, 2022. The court was inaugurated by Principal District and Sessions Judge S. Krishnakumar at an event presided over by the President of the Calicut Bar Association, Advocate M.S. Saji.
A division bench of Justices A. Muhamed Mustaque and C.S. Dias had previously called for a report on the possibility of having dedicated child-friendly rooms in all Family Courts. The need for such spaces was highlighted due to inadequate infrastructure and facilities in most Family Courts, which often operate in leased premises. This lack of proper facilities results in children and their parents having to wait in crowded corridors or even on roads, causing additional stress and negative perceptions of the justice system.
The Supreme Court has also emphasized the importance of making Family Courts more child-friendly. The new court in Kozhikode has been designed to reduce the stress and trauma experienced by children involved in legal proceedings. The court premises feature artwork by artists such as Sunil Ashokapuram and Nisha Ravindran, contributing to a more welcoming and calming atmosphere.
This initiative marks a significant step towards improving the Family Court system in India, ensuring that young minds are protected from the negative impacts of legal disputes and providing them with a more supportive environment.
