The Gauhati High Court has granted bail to Rajkanya Baruah, who was involved in a significant road accident in Guwahati on October 2 of last year. The accident, which occurred in the Rukminigaon area, resulted in the death of one person and left seven others injured. Rajkanya was reportedly driving under the influence and recklessly hit a group of workers around 1 AM.
Rajkanya Baruah had been held at Guwahati Central Jail for the past five months and had been applying for bail during this period. On Wednesday, March 9, the court granted her bail on a surety of Rs 50,000. She was released from jail at around 8 AM today.
In its order, the court noted that determining whether Rajkanya’s actions were intentional and likely to cause death or were merely reckless without homicidal intent would depend on evidence provided during the trial. The court also observed that there was no significant risk of Rajkanya influencing witnesses or evading trial. Therefore, it was unlikely that granting her bail would hinder the trial process.
