The Orissa High Court has recently lowered the monthly maintenance payment for Tapaswini Dash from ₹17,000 to ₹10,000. This decision comes after a prolonged legal conflict involving her husband, Dr. Sumit Sahu.
Tapaswini, 26, claimed she married Dr. Sumit Sahu on September 7, 2020, and lived with him for six months. She alleges that her in-laws sent her away, asking her to stay with her parents until their marriage was completed according to Vedic traditions.
On November 22, 2021, Tapaswini appeared outside Sumit’s house in Brahmanagar, Berhampur, dressed as a bride and demanded to be allowed back into the home. For 44 days, she stayed outside the house with support from social activists.
The court directed the couple to resolve their issues within seven days and begin their married life together. The government was instructed to cover their rented accommodation costs, while Sumit was ordered to pay for Tapaswini’s food and other expenses. Additionally, the court ruled that no one should interfere with or visit the couple during their stay.
When Sumit did not attend a court hearing, Tapaswini accused him of fleeing and filed a missing person report at Aska police station. She continued to protest outside her in-laws’ house and even entered Dr. Sumit’s home with activists.
In response, Sumit issued an audio message clarifying that he was not missing and was simply resting. He claimed Tapaswini’s actions were aimed at gaining publicity and sympathy, and that he and his family had not demanded any money.
On February 2, 2022, the high court ordered Sumit to pay ₹17,000 per month in maintenance to Tapaswini. Following this, Sumit’s family appealed, seeking a reduction in the maintenance amount and alternative accommodation arrangements.
In a recent ruling, the Orissa High Court reduced the maintenance amount from ₹17,000 to ₹10,000.
