IIT-Guwahati Professor Found Hanging in Campus Quarters

A 47-year-old assistant professor of mathematics at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was found dead in his residential quarters on Friday. Police suspect that he may have died by suicide a few days earlier.

Police Investigation

Hitesh Ch. Roy, Superintendent of Police for Kamrup district, confirmed that the professor’s body was discovered inside a locked faculty quarter, D-022, after authorities received a report of a foul smell coming from the room.

“We suspect that the death occurred two to three days ago. The body has been sent for post-mortem,” Roy said.

Officials noted that initial evidence suggests suicide, but a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact cause.

Official Statement from IIT-Guwahati

The deceased professor, Kamal, was the son of Ismatullah Ansari from Paschim Vihar, New Delhi.

IIT-Guwahati released an official statement expressing condolences to the professor’s family. “The institute is trying to establish contact with the deceased’s family. We express our deepest sympathies during this difficult time. IIT-Guwahati will fully cooperate with the police investigation and will also conduct an internal inquiry into the matter.”

Police continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the professor’s death.
