In a 2010 case from Chennai, an aspiring engineering student was falsely accused of rape by a woman and her family. The accusation followed a fallout between the two families, who had initially planned to marry their children to each other, but had a disagreement over property matters.
The woman’s family claimed that the man had impregnated their daughter and refused to marry her. As a result, the man was taken to court and kept in custody for 95 days before he was granted bail.
By February 2010, the woman had already given birth, and a DNA test confirmed that the man was not the father. Despite this, the case went to trial, and it wasn’t until 2016 that a Mahila court in Chennai acquitted the man, declaring him innocent.
Although he was proven innocent, the man had already spent seven years in jail. The court awarded him compensation of Rs 15 lakhs for the wrongful accusation and imprisonment.
