Election Results 2024: BJP Seeks JD(U), TDP Support After Falling Short of Majority
The Election Commission of India announced the results for all 543 Lok Sabha seats early this morning. The BJP-led NDA secured the most seats but fell short of an outright majority. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 240 seats, needing 272 for a majority. Now, the party will rely on its allies to form the next government.
The NDA has called a meeting in New Delhi today to combine their seats for a comfortable majority. Meanwhile, the Indian National Developmental, Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc crossed 200 seats but did not reach the majority mark. They will also meet today to discuss their next moves.
With a combined 28 seats, N. Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) are crucial for the BJP-led NDA. Both parties have reaffirmed their support for the NDA and will attend the alliance’s meeting.
The results also brought significant changes in two states. In Odisha, the BJP ended Naveen Patnaik’s 24-year tenure with a decisive victory. In Andhra Pradesh, Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP defeated Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress Party, setting Naidu up for his fourth term as Chief Minister.
