Court Urges Woman to Seek Employment Instead of Relying on Alimony

A district court in Delhi has advised a woman to find a job rather than rely on alimony from her estranged husband. The court, led by Judge Rekha Rani, stated that the woman, who is qualified and capable, should not impose a financial burden on her former spouse. This ruling could spark discussions about the alimony system in India.

The husband agreed to help his ex-wife find a job and continue paying maintenance for a year. He challenged the court’s previous order requiring him to pay Rs 12,000 a month to support her.

Judge Rani noted that the woman admitted to being more qualified and able to work. She had previously argued that although she was qualified, she had never worked or traveled alone due to her early marriage.

The husband contended that his ex-wife, an MSc gold medalist, was not entitled to financial support because she had not actively sought employment and preferred to remain financially dependent on him. The court criticized her request for assistance with job searches, stating that if she could manage legal proceedings independently, she should also be able to search for a job on her own.
