Hyderabad, July 2023 – A 38-year-old man, M. Venkat Reddy, died by suicide after allegedly being mentally harassed by his wife and her parents. The tragic incident happened on July 2 in the Kushaiguda area of Hyderabad.
According to the police, Venkat Reddy consumed pesticide at his home after a heated argument with his wife Kalyani and her parents. He was admitted to a hospital but passed away on July 5.
The trouble began because Kalyani was not willing to stay with her mother-in-law. She and her parents pressured Reddy to send his mother away. Two months earlier, Kalyani had left to stay with her parents in Warangal. On July 2, she returned to Reddy’s house along with her parents and started an argument.
They demanded that Venkat Reddy should live separately with only his wife and children, and also transfer his property in the names of their two daughters, aged seven and two and a half.
When the argument got loud, Reddy requested them to stay calm, saying it would bring shame to the family in front of the neighbors. But they continued to shout. Feeling deeply humiliated, Reddy warned them he might end his life if they didn’t stop. In response, they mocked him, saying he wouldn’t dare do it.
Hurt and insulted, Venkat Reddy took pesticide that same day.
His sister has filed a police complaint against Kalyani and her parents, accusing them of harassment that led to his death. The police are investigating the case.
