Mumbai Man Released After 17 Months in Jail as DNA Proves He Didn’t Father Teen’s Baby
On January 25, 2022, a Mumbai sessions court granted bail to a man who had spent 17 months in jail for a rape accusation. He was accused of raping and impregnating his 19-year-old deaf and mute neighbour, but a DNA test later proved he was not the baby’s father.
The court stated:
“The accused was arrested on August 1, 2019. The chargesheet has already been filed, but the final trial will take time. Based on the DNA report submitted, the request for bail is granted.”
The case began when the teenage girl, who was studying in Class 7, complained of stomach pain on July 23, 2019. Her teacher informed her father, who then took her to a doctor. A sonography test showed that she was already six months pregnant.
When asked what happened, the girl used sign language to explain that about five to six months earlier, while going to a public toilet, the accused forced her into his home, sexually assaulted her, and took photographs. The family then filed an FIR with the police. The girl’s statement was recorded with the help of a special teacher for the deaf.
The man was arrested shortly after. During the bail hearing, the prosecution argued against his release, saying he might influence witnesses or tamper with evidence.
However, the DNA evidence clearly showed that he was not the father of the baby, which weakened the case against him. As a result, the court granted him bail with the following conditions:
- He must provide a surety of ₹30,000.
- He must not contact the girl or her family.
- He must attend all court hearings.
- He must submit his address, phone number, Aadhaar card, and voter ID.
This case once again shows the importance of forensic evidence like DNA testing in protecting innocent people and ensuring fair trials.
