A Nagpur court has granted pre-arrest bail to Pradeep Makhijani, a psychologist, who was accused of rape by his former domestic worker. The woman, who began working as his housekeeper in September last year, accused Makhijani of sexually exploiting her in October. She left her job in November and also claimed that Makhijani did not clear her pending wages.
Makhijani, represented by his lawyer Jitesh Duhilani, argued in court that he has been suffering from erectile dysfunction (ED) since 2019, which has made him impotent. His defense team presented pathological and clinical reports showing that he also has high diabetes, further supporting his claim of ED.
Taking this medical evidence into consideration, the court granted Makhijani pre-arrest bail. As part of the conditions, Makhijani has agreed to hand over his mobile phone to the investigating officers and undergo a medical examination during the investigation.
The court also ordered him to provide personal and surety bonds of Rs 25,000, along with one solvent surety of the same amount. Additionally, Makhijani is required to report to the police station every Thursday until the chargesheet is filed.
The additional public prosecutor, AM Mahurkar, had argued that the investigation was ongoing and that Makhijani’s mobile phone needed to be recovered. However, Makhijani’s defense lawyer argued that his arrest would cause unnecessary inconvenience, as he maintains his innocence.
