A 20-year-old second-year BA student from Delhi University’s School of Open Learning was tragically abducted from his home in northeast Delhi and beaten to death in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. Himanshu Sharma’s death has left his family and community in shock and mourning.
The victim’s family claims that Himanshu was innocent, refuting accusations made by the girl’s family, who alleged that he had raped and blackmailed their 19-year-old daughter. Rajni Sharma, Himanshu’s mother, denies these charges, stating, “The allegations are a lie. There was no woman involved. Himanshu received a call from the girl’s phone on Saturday. Once he left home, four to five of her family members abducted him to Baghpat and killed him.”
The police have filed an FIR against seven people, including the girl’s mother. Two arrests have been made in connection with the case, as confirmed by Baghpat Kotwali circle officer Harish Bhadauria.
Rajni Sharma, who has been raising her two children alone for the past 12 years after her husband abandoned the family, recounted the tragic events of the day. Running a small grocery shop and stitching clothes to make ends meet, Rajni became concerned when Himanshu didn’t return home after being invited to a birthday party. After finding his phone switched off, she alerted relatives and neighbors, eventually learning from a neighbor that her son had been kidnapped.
The neighbor even made a video call to the kidnappers, showing Himanshu in their custody and threatening to kill him. Despite Rajni’s attempts to rescue her son, she found him severely injured in a car in Baghpat. A police control room van arrived shortly after, arresting two of the suspects.
The Sharma family insists they were unaware of any relationship between Himanshu and the girl. Grieving the loss of her son, Rajni expressed her devastation, “Our dreams have been completely crushed. If they had problems, why didn’t they speak to me first? Did they have to kill him?”
This tragic incident highlights the severe consequences of unchecked accusations and violence, leaving a family heartbroken and a community in mourning.
