Pune Family Court Orders 78-Year-Old Woman to Pay Rs 25,000 Monthly Alimony to 83-Year-Old Husband
In a remarkable judgement, the Pune Family Court has ordered a 78-year-old woman to pay Rs 25,000 per month in interim alimony to her 83-year-old husband. This verdict was delivered by Family Court Judge Raghavendra Aradhye.
The couple, married since 1964, filed for divorce in 2019 after 55 years of marriage. The husband, an 83-year-old director of an educational institution, claimed he was harassed by his wife, who is the president of the same organization. He stated that despite taking care of his wife during her illness, she began harassing him once she recovered.
The husband, who suffers from diabetes and heart disease, said his wife forbade him from eating at home, worsening his health. Frustrated by her behavior, he filed for divorce in 2018. Both parties have accused each other of having extramarital affairs.
The couple has two married daughters.
According to the husband’s lawyer, Adv. Vaishali Chandne, “If the husband does not have a source of income and his wife does, and there are ongoing family disputes, the husband may file a claim for alimony under Section 24 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. This case demonstrates that not only the wife but also unjust men can receive justice.”
On Friday, the court ruled in favor of the husband, ordering the wife to pay him a monthly alimony of Rs. 25,000.
This case highlights the complexities of family disputes and the legal provisions that ensure justice for both parties, regardless of gender.
