Chennai Court Awards Rs 15 Lakh Compensation to Student Falsely Accused of Rape

A Chennai court has awarded Rs 15 lakh as compensation to Santhosh, a former college student who was falsely accused of rape and endured a seven-year legal battle. The false charges significantly impacted his career and personal life.

The case began when Santhosh, then a BTech student, was accused by a neighbor of impregnating her daughter. The woman’s mother demanded that Santhosh marry her daughter, which he denied. Following this, the woman and her parents lodged a rape complaint against him.

Santhosh was arrested and spent 95 days in judicial custody. He was granted bail on February 12, 2010, but by then, the woman had delivered a child. A DNA test later proved that Santhosh was not the father. Despite this evidence, the case went to trial. On February 10, 2016, a mahila court in Chennai acquitted Santhosh.

After his acquittal, Santhosh filed a lawsuit seeking Rs 30 lakh in compensation for the false rape accusation that had destroyed his career and forced him to spend Rs 2 lakh on legal expenses. He also faced significant hardships, such as being unable to obtain a commercial driving license and having to work as an office assistant for minimal pay.

Partially allowing his plea, the court awarded him Rs 15 lakh in compensation and directed the woman and her parents to pay this amount. Santhosh’s lawyer, A. Sirajudeen, highlighted that the false charges had not only ruined Santhosh’s career but also inflicted severe emotional and financial distress.

This case underscores the profound impact false accusations can have on an individual’s life and emphasizes the importance of justice and compensation for those wrongfully accused.
