86-Year-Old Woman Killed by Daughter-in-Law Using Frying Pan and Pressure Cooker in Delhi

In a shocking incident in southwest Delhi, a 48-year-old woman was arrested for killing her 86-year-old bedridden mother-in-law on April 28. The accused, Sharmishtha Som, allegedly attacked her mother-in-law, Hashi Som, using a frying pan and pressure cooker, causing fatal injuries to her head and body.

The Incident

The tension between Sharmishtha and her mother-in-law had been growing since Hashi was moved to Delhi from Kolkata last year due to her inability to walk. Despite being provided with a separate flat across the street from her son’s home, Sharmishtha was frustrated by the burden of caregiving, which reportedly worsened her relationship with her husband, Surjeet Som.

On the day of the murder, CCTV footage captured Sharmishtha entering Hashi’s flat with a frying pan and pressure cooker in hand. Shortly after, sounds of screams and repeated blows were heard. The footage also showed Sharmishtha cleaning the blood-stained pan and cooker after the attack.

Investigation and Arrest

When Surjeet returned home, he found his mother’s lifeless body. The autopsy revealed 14 injuries, mostly to the head, caused by blunt force trauma. The post-mortem confirmed that the cause of death was haemorrhagic shock due to the injuries sustained.

Though Sharmishtha initially tried to cover up the crime by claiming her mother-in-law had fallen, the CCTV footage and the autopsy report contradicted her version. Sharmishtha was arrested, and an FIR for murder was registered. The police ruled out Surjeet’s involvement in the crime.

Conclusion

This tragic incident highlights the extreme measures taken due to family disputes. The crime, caught on CCTV, underscores the importance of early intervention in family conflicts to prevent such horrifying outcomes. The case is currently under investigation, and Sharmishtha remains in police custody.
