In a shocking incident from Delhi, a 48-year-old woman was arrested for killing her bedridden mother-in-law on April 28. She used a frying pan and a pressure cooker to commit the crime in southwest Delhi. The elderly woman had 14 injuries on her body, with multiple hits to her head and face.
Sarmistha Som, the daughter-in-law, was reportedly frustrated with taking care of her 86-year-old mother-in-law, Hashi Som. This responsibility had strained her relationship with her husband. Sarmistha decided to kill her mother-in-law and attempted to make it look like an accident. However, the post-mortem report and footage from a bedside camera exposed her lie.
Sarmistha lived with her husband, Surjeet Som, 51, and their 16-year-old daughter at Swastik Residency in Neb Sarai. Hashi Som, originally from Kolkata, required care due to her age and inability to walk. Surjeet brought her to Delhi in March of the previous year. Initially, she stayed with the family, but due to Sharmishtha’s constant protests, Surjeet moved his mother to a rented one-room flat across from their home last October.
Surjeet had installed a CCTV camera on the bedside table to monitor his mother. On the day of the murder, he was busy with work and did not check the camera feed. He discovered his mother’s body only after returning home.
Their daughter informed the police about the strained relationship between her mother and grandmother. Although the camera’s video storage was missing, Surjeet handed over the memory card he had removed. The footage showed Sarmistha entering the flat with a pressure cooker and frying pan at 10:30 AM on April 28. Sounds of screams and blows could be heard. Later, Sarmistha was seen cleaning the cooker and pan.
A police officer stated, “The autopsy report indicates 14 injuries on the victim’s head. The cause of death was hemorrhagic shock due to ante-mortem injuries from blunt force impacts on the head, right hand, left upper limb, and left lower limb.”
Sarmistha was arrested and an FIR for murder was registered. The police ruled out the son’s involvement.
