Youth Commits Suicide After Domestic Violence Complaint; Father Also Ends Life
In January 2022, a young man named Anto (32) from Kalady, Kerala, committed suicide after his wife, Niya, filed a domestic violence complaint against him. The distressing news led his father, Antony (70), to also end his life by setting himself on fire.
Anto set himself ablaze on a road near the Sivajipuram-Thuravoor area. Despite being rushed to a private hospital in Angamaly, he succumbed to his injuries around 4 PM. Upon hearing of his son’s death, Antony went to his daughter-in-law Niya’s house in Kunnukara and committed suicide on the spot.
Anto had recently returned to Kerala after working abroad. His wife, Niya, had left their home following an argument and had been staying away for nine months. Niya lodged a complaint with the Chengamanadu police, accusing Anto and his family of not caring for their children and mentally torturing her. The police registered a case against Anto and his mother, Elsy.
According to the police, Anto may have taken his own life due to the immense mental pressure and agony caused by the domestic violence case. This tragic sequence of events underscores the severe emotional toll domestic disputes can have on individuals and families.
