In a shocking incident, a 20-year-old man named Yogesh Kumar died in police custody on Thursday, May 16th, after being accused of rape and sexual assault. Yogesh, who worked at a bakery in Chipyana village, was taken for questioning by the police on Wednesday after a female co-worker accused him of rape and harassment.
The complaint was sent to the assistant commissioner of police by the Director General of Police in Lucknow. The woman alleged that the incident took place around a month and a half ago. Despite the complaint, no FIR had been filed against Yogesh at the time of his custody.
On Thursday morning at 10 am, Yogesh was found hanging from a rope inside the barracks at the Chipyana police post. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) confirmed that an investigation has been launched in accordance with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) guidelines.
Yogesh’s brother, Jitendra, made serious allegations against the police, claiming they demanded ₹5 lakh to release his brother. Jitendra said he managed to pay ₹53,000 but was told to bring the rest of the amount the next day. He was not allowed to meet his brother and later learned that Yogesh had died.
Jitendra further claimed that his brother had a dispute with the woman at work two months ago, which the manager had resolved. However, he believed that the woman held a grudge and wanted revenge.
In response to the incident, Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh announced the suspension of all personnel at the police post, except for two trainees. A preliminary investigation has been launched against the police post in-charge, Bisrakh police station in-charge, and the assistant commissioner of police. A detailed investigation is being conducted by Additional DCP Noida Manish Mishra, with strict actions promised for any negligence. The post-mortem examination will be conducted by a panel of doctors, and videography will be done to ensure transparency.
When asked about the bribery allegations, Commissioner Singh said the family had not made any formal written complaint against the police, only against the woman. However, the bribery accusations will also be investigated as part of the ongoing probe.
Rajeev Kumar Sharma, a human rights and RTI activist, criticized the police for detaining Yogesh without filing an FIR, calling it illegal.
Following the incident, an FIR has been filed against the woman under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code, based on a complaint from Yogesh’s family.
