Man Wrongly Imprisoned for Rape Spends 7 Years in Jail Before Acquittal

In a 2010 case from Chennai, an engineering student was wrongfully accused of rape by a woman and her family after a property dispute between their families. The accusation claimed the student had impregnated their daughter and refused to marry her.

The student was held in custody for 95 days before securing bail. By February 2010, the woman had given birth, and a DNA test proved the student was not the father. Despite this, the case proceeded to trial, and it was only in 2016 that a Mahila court in Chennai acquitted him.

During the wrongful imprisonment, the innocent man spent 7 years in jail. Following his acquittal, the court awarded him Rs 15 lakhs in compensation for the injustice he suffered.
