CJI Advocates for Preference to Women in Panel Advocate Appointments on International Women’s Day

On International Women’s Day, Chief Justice of India (CJI) N.V. Ramana highlighted the importance of giving women preference when appointing panel advocates. He stated that this would help increase their visibility before the Bench and encourage more women to pursue careers in law.

CJI Ramana noted that many talented women lawyers leave the profession due to societal pressures. He emphasized the need for creating an environment that supports women in continuing their legal careers. He also pointed out that out of the approximately 17 lakh lawyers in India, only 15% are women.

The Chief Justice has been working to address this gender imbalance. He shared that, out of the 9 vacancies at the Supreme Court, 3 were filled by women judges. CJI Ramana further explained that the inclusion of women in law is not just symbolic but brings fresh perspectives, which are essential for the development of the legal field.

In his concluding remarks, CJI Ramana expressed that if ensuring women receive their rightful share in the legal profession is considered a revolution, he would be proud to be called a revolutionary.
