In a shocking incident, Konanakunte police arrested a 26-year-old woman, Shilpa, and her mother Kempadevamma on September 4 for allegedly killing Shilpa’s husband and staging it as an accidental death.
On September 2, Shilpa transported her husband Mahesh’s body to his native village near Mandya for cremation. However, Mahesh’s family noticed multiple bruises and blood clots on his body and immediately alerted the police.
A complaint was filed, and a post-mortem confirmed that Mahesh’s death was due to assault and torture. Upon questioning, Shilpa admitted that she, her mother, and a relative beat Mahesh to death. The police arrested Shilpa and Kempadevamma while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the relative involved in the crime.
Shilpa and Mahesh were married for eight years and had a six-year-old son. Both worked as domestic helpers in an apartment and lived in a rented home in Goudanapalya.
According to the police, Mahesh had developed an alcohol addiction, leading to frequent fights between the couple. Investigations revealed that Shilpa would often call her parents and relatives to assault Mahesh.
Days before the incident, Mahesh visited his native place and shared his struggles with his younger brother, Shivakumar. He then returned to Bengaluru to see his son, which was the last time he was seen alive.
On September 1, Shilpa called Shivakumar, claiming Mahesh died due to an epileptic seizure after getting drunk and being exposed to rain.
Both Shilpa and Kempadevamma have been charged under Section 302 (murder) and Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code. They have been remanded to judicial custody as investigations continue.
This tragic case highlights the ongoing issues of domestic violence and alcohol abuse within relationships, with devastating consequences for families involved.\
