Unmarried Woman Throws Newborn from Window in Fear of Social Stigma, Charged with Murder

A 20-year-old unmarried woman threw her newborn baby from the washroom window of her apartment in Delhi’s Jai Ambey Apartments, New Ashok Nagar, on Monday, January 9, 2023. She admitted to the police that she took this drastic step fearing social stigma.

The incident came to light when police received a report about a newborn baby falling from a height. An ASI was dispatched to the scene and discovered that the infant had been taken to Metro Hospital in Noida by concerned residents.

“ASI Yudhvir went to Metro Hospital, where doctors declared the baby dead. The boy’s medical certificate (MLC) was collected, and the body was transferred to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital in Delhi,” stated the Delhi Police.

The police initiated an investigation, checking multiple houses near the location where the baby was found.

“During the house checks, we found blood traces in a dustbin. Upon questioning the residents, a young woman confessed to giving birth to the baby boy and then throwing him from the washroom window,” said the police.

The woman was taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital for a medical examination. She revealed that she was unmarried and, fearing social stigma, attempted to dispose of the baby.

An FIR has been registered under Sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code in connection with this incident.
