A wedding in Telangana was abruptly canceled by the bride on Thursday because she demanded more dowry from the groom’s family. The bride insisted on receiving over Rs 2 lakh, adhering to the tribe’s custom of ‘reverse dowry,’ where the groom’s family pays the bride.
The wedding was set to take place in Ghatkesar, near Hyderabad. However, the bride, who was supposed to travel from her native Aswaraopet village, refused to participate in the ceremony.
When the bride didn’t arrive at the venue, the groom’s family went to the hotel where the bride’s family was staying to seek an explanation. They were shocked to learn that the bride was asking for a higher dowry.
The groom and his family then left the wedding venue and went to the police station. The bride’s family was called in for discussions.
According to the police, the families discussed the issue and resolved it among themselves. “The two families sorted it out among themselves and the wedding was called off. No complaint was lodged, and no one was booked. It turned out the bride was not interested in the marriage, so she tossed up a demand for more dowry and didn’t turn up at the ‘mandap’,” a police officer said.
Police reported that the bride’s family had initially received Rs 2 lakh in dowry from the groom’s family. However, since the bride was adamant in her decision, her family returned the money, and both families parted ways amicably.
