21-Year-Old Delhi Student Dies by Suicide After Alleged Police Harassment
In March 2016, a 21-year-old university student named Suraj Thakur died by suicide in Delhi after he was reportedly harassed by the police. Suraj lived in the Hari Nagar area of West Delhi. He ended his life by hanging himself just hours after being questioned by police regarding a phone-snatching case involving some of his friends.
According to his 18-year-old brother, Neeraj, Suraj was taken in by the police, who also seized his phone without informing the family. Neeraj claims that Suraj was threatened and tortured during his time with the authorities.
After returning home from police custody, Suraj went straight to his room and took his own life. In a video recorded before his death, Suraj stated, “I didn’t do anything wrong. I am innocent. My parents’ reputation is at stake. I am depressed. I am committing suicide and I am responsible for this. I won’t blame anyone.”
In the same video, he also said that he was harassed by the police.
However, the Delhi Police denied these allegations. They said Suraj was only called for questioning and was later released. A senior police official, Gautam, mentioned that a full investigation is underway and legal action will be taken if necessary.
Suraj is survived by his mother, who is a homemaker, his father, a laborer, his brother Neeraj, and another sibling.
