St. Xavier’s University Professor Forced to Resign Over Instagram Pictures Controversy
An assistant professor of English at Kolkata’s St. Xavier’s University faced allegations leading to her resignation due to purportedly ‘inappropriate’ photos on her private Instagram account. The controversy arose after a parent of a first-year male undergraduate student filed a complaint, claiming the photos were objectionable and bordered on nudity.
In response to the complaint, Nandini Guha, the former assistant professor, asserted that the university dismissed her based on parental objections regarding her private social media activity. She highlighted that her Instagram profile was private, limiting access to only approved followers, and that the photos in question were posted two months before her employment at the university.
Guha further alleged that she was pressured to resign, accusing the university of tarnishing her reputation unjustly. She filed a police complaint, suggesting her Instagram account might have been compromised, leading to the unauthorized disclosure of her photos.
In contrast, St. Xavier’s University refuted Guha’s claims, asserting that her resignation was voluntary and denying any involvement in her alleged mistreatment. The university also demanded an apology and compensation for reputational damage caused by what they described as baseless allegations.
The incident has raised significant questions about privacy rights, academic integrity, and the responsibilities of educational institutions towards their faculty members in the age of social media.
