Gauhati High Court Grants Bail to Rajkanya Baruah in Road Accident Case
The Gauhati High Court has granted bail to Rajkanya Baruah, who was involved in a serious road accident that happened on October 2 last year in the Rukminigaon area of Guwahati. The accident resulted in the death of one person and injuries to seven others.
According to reports, Rajkanya was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol at around 1 AM when she hit a group of roadside workers. The incident caused public outrage due to the reckless nature of the act.
She had been in Guwahati Central Jail for the last five months and had applied for bail multiple times. On Wednesday, March 9, the court granted her bail with a surety of ₹50,000. She was released from jail around 8 AM the next morning.
In its order, the court observed that the exact mental state of the accused at the time of the incident will be determined during the trial based on witness statements. The court stated that there is no evidence suggesting that Rajkanya, who is a woman, would try to influence witnesses or avoid the trial.
The court added, “Since there is no threat of interference in the legal process, her release on bail is unlikely to affect the case.”
Rajkanya Baruah’s case remains under trial, and further legal proceedings will determine her level of responsibility in the tragic accident.
