Pune Court Orders Wife to Pay Rs 25,000 Monthly Alimony to 83-Year-Old Husband

Pune Family Court Orders Wife to Pay Rs 25,000 Monthly Alimony to Husband

In an unusual case, a Pune family court has directed a 78-year-old woman to pay Rs 25,000 per month as interim alimony to her 83-year-old husband. The judgment was delivered by Family Court Judge Raghavendra Aradhye.

The couple, who got married in 1964, filed for divorce in 2019 after 55 years of marriage. Both are associated with the same educational institution, where the husband serves as director and the wife as president.

In his petition, the husband claimed he had endured years of harassment from his wife, including being forced to leave the institution and their home. He stated that despite taking care of her during an illness, she resumed harassing him after her recovery.

The man, who suffers from diabetes and heart disease, alleged that his wife refused to let him eat at home and neglected his health needs. Frustrated by her behavior, he filed for divorce in 2018. Both parties also accused each other of having extramarital affairs.

The couple has two married daughters.

The court ruling was based on Section 24 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, which allows a financially dependent spouse to claim alimony. The husband’s lawyer, Adv. Vaishali Chandne, emphasized the significance of this judgment, saying, “This case highlights that not only women but also men facing injustice can seek justice through the legal system.”

On Friday, the court ruled in favor of the husband, ordering the wife to pay Rs 25,000 as monthly alimony. This unique case underscores the importance of gender equality in legal judgments and the provision of justice for all parties.
