43-Year-Old Man Appeals to PMO Against False Rape Charges by Partner
Arnab Ganguly, a 43-year-old businessman, has written to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the Ministry of Women and Child Development about the false rape charges filed against him by a woman who initially promised to marry him.
Arnab, divorced for eight years, moved to Gurugram in 2015 and started a call center. It was there he met the woman, who worked as an HR executive in his company. Initially, their relationship was professional, but over time, the woman shared her troubled marriage with him. Having experienced divorce himself, Arnab supported her emotionally.
Their bond deepened, and the woman expressed her love for Arnab. He asked if she was serious about ending her marriage and considering a future together. “At 42, I didn’t want just a casual relationship,” Arnab said. “We became intimate only after she assured me she wanted to marry.”
However, Arnab later realized she was avoiding the commitment. When he offered to meet her family in March of the previous year, she had him arrested just days before his scheduled visit, alleging rape.
Arnab spent eight months in Tihar Jail before deciding to fight back by writing to lawmakers. In his petition, he questioned the legal system’s fairness, saying: “If a girl is in a relationship, promises marriage, gets physically intimate, and then refuses to marry, can a rape charge be filed against her?”
Arnab’s battle to prove his innocence lasted six years. His case highlights the potential misuse of laws meant to protect genuine victims and the devastating impact false accusations can have on individuals.
Arnab’s appeal to the PMO sheds light on the urgent need for a balanced legal approach to prevent the misuse of laws and protect the innocent.
