Kolkata St. Xavier’s University Professor Resigns Over Instagram Photos

A female assistant professor of English at St. Xavier’s University in Kolkata was reportedly forced to resign after being accused of posting “inappropriate” photos on her private Instagram account. The controversy arose when a parent of a first-year male student discovered his son viewing these images, which led to a formal complaint against the professor.

The parent’s complaint described the photos as “objectionable,” “vulgar,” and “bordering on nudity.” He expressed shock and dismay that his son had seen his professor in such revealing clothing, claiming it was indecent for an 18-year-old to view his teacher in this manner. The parent argued that it was inappropriate for a teacher to post such images on social media, considering the impact it could have on students.

The former assistant professor, Nandini Guha, stated that she was pressured to leave her position after the university received the complaint. She was handed a copy of the parent’s letter along with thumbnails of her Instagram photos. Guha emphasized that her Instagram account was private, and she did not understand how the images were accessed. She also noted that these photos were posted two months before she joined the university.

Guha alleged that the university forced her to resign, accusing her of tarnishing the institution’s reputation. However, St. Xavier’s University denied these claims, insisting that she resigned voluntarily.

On October 24, 2021, Guha filed a police complaint, alleging that her private Instagram account may have been compromised, leading to the unauthorized distribution of her images. She also accused the university of sexual harassment and character assassination.

Guha stated in her police report that the only way her Instagram Stories could have been accessed by others was through hacking or if someone had taken screenshots and circulated them. The following day, on October 25, 2021, she resigned from her position.

In March 2022, Guha sent a legal notice to St. Xavier’s University, demanding the complaint letter from the parent, minutes from the October 7 meeting, and other relevant documents. The university responded by denying all allegations and described her claims as “false, frivolous, fabricated, and ill-motivated.”

Furthermore, the university demanded an unconditional apology from Guha and sought ₹99 crore in compensation, claiming her actions had caused “immense and irreparable damage” to the university’s reputation.
