Orissa High Court Lowers Tapaswini Dash’s Maintenance to ₹10,000 in Marital Dispute Case
The Orissa High Court has reduced the monthly maintenance amount that Dr. Sumit Sahu must pay to his wife, Tapaswini Dash, from ₹17,000 to ₹10,000. This update comes after an appeal was filed by Sumit’s family to revise the maintenance order and arrange alternative accommodation for Tapaswini.
This high-profile case began when Tapaswini, a 26-year-old woman, claimed she had legally married Dr. Sumit Sahu on September 7, 2020. She said she lived with him and his family for six months before being forced out under the excuse of needing a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony.
In November, Tapaswini appeared dressed as a bride and sat outside Sumit’s home in Brahmanagar, Berhampur, demanding to live with him. She stayed there for 44 days with support from women activists.
The court then ordered the couple to stay together for seven days in a rented house to try to resolve their issues. The government covered the rent, while Sumit was told to pay for her food and daily needs. However, Tapaswini later claimed Sumit disappeared, and she filed a missing person complaint.
Dr. Sumit later denied the allegations in an audio message, saying he was only resting and not missing. He claimed Tapaswini wanted attention and was misrepresenting facts to gain public sympathy.
In February 2022, the court ordered Sumit to pay ₹17,000 per month to Tapaswini. But after the Ganjam District and Sessions Court ruled that she could stay at her in-laws’ house, Sumit’s family appealed to reduce the maintenance.
Now, the Orissa High Court has accepted the appeal and decided to lower the monthly maintenance to ₹10,000.
This case remains under legal review, with further hearings expected.
