Mumbai Court Acquits Grandfather After DNA Test Proves He Didn’t Impregnate Granddaughter

Mumbai: Grandfather Cleared in POCSO Case After DNA Test

In a shocking case from Mumbai, a 60-year-old man spent five years in jail after being accused of sexually abusing his 17-year-old granddaughter for eight years and making her pregnant. However, recent DNA tests revealed that he was not the father of the baby, and a special POCSO court has now acquitted him.

The DNA test also ruled out another man whom the girl had earlier accused. This made the court believe that the girl was involved with a third person, whose identity she was trying to hide.

Judge Kalpana K Patil, while delivering the verdict, said that the girl had changed her statements and had not revealed the truth about the person with whom she had physical relations. “Her statements are not supported by any other evidence and are not trustworthy,” the judge said.

The girl had admitted that when she missed her periods, she told her friend and visited a hospital with her friend’s mother. The court questioned why she didn’t mention any abuse to them at that time.

She also accepted that she would sometimes leave home and stay away for days. In 2015, the grandfather even filed a missing person report. The judge pointed out that during these times, the girl had the chance to approach the police if she was facing abuse, but she didn’t.

The girl also said her grandfather would burn her with cigarettes while she was asleep. However, she added that she used to scream loudly when beaten, and neighbors would come to check on her. The court questioned why she didn’t speak up about the burns then.

Medical reports showed she had eight old burn scars, which the court said must have caused her pain. Still, her silence during those times raised doubts.

Both the grandfather and the boy she first accused were confirmed by DNA tests to not be the father of her child. This led the court to conclude that she had a relationship with someone else and was protecting him.

The girl had said that after her grandmother died, her grandfather looked after her. She accused him of sexual assault and physical abuse, including burning her with cigarettes. However, she also said that she had not told anyone about this before.

The judge said, “It is clear that the girl was in a relationship with another person and wanted to protect him. Her statements do not seem reliable, and there is no strong evidence to support her claims.”

Based on this, the court acquitted the grandfather of all charges.
