Man Acquitted After 7 Years for Rape of Step-Daughter in Kalyan Court

A 35-year-old man, Vipul Narkar, was acquitted on Thursday by the Kalyan Sessions Court after spending seven years in prison for the alleged rape of his 15-year-old step-daughter in 2015. The court found that Narkar had been falsely accused by his step-daughter, his wife, and her ex-husband.

The step-daughter reportedly concocted the false allegations after watching a crime show on television. She aimed to cover up her affair with a boyfriend and hoped to reunite her parents.

Vipul Narkar, then 28, had a printing business when he met and married the girl’s mother, a divorcee with two children. Narkar provided for the family, buying a flat in Dombivli and enrolling the children in school. However, tensions arose when Narkar reprimanded his step-daughter for being with a boy.

In April 2015, after a suicide attempt by the girl, she accused Narkar of sexual assault. Narkar, unable to afford a lawyer, was imprisoned under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

In 2018, lawyer Ganesh Gholap took up Narkar’s case after noticing his good behavior and fluent English in jail. Despite delays due to the pandemic, Gholap’s team uncovered inconsistencies in the girl’s story and found no medical evidence of assault.

The girl’s testimony revealed that she fabricated the rape accusations to reunite her parents. After reviewing all evidence, Judge AD Harne acquitted Narkar of all charges in June 2022.
