A 21-year-old man accused of raping his wife tragically died by suicide by jumping from the sixth floor of a Faridabad court building on Saturday. The incident occurred shortly after the hearing of his regular bail plea.
The man, identified as Suraj, was reportedly distressed due to financial demands made by his in-laws. According to his parents, Suraj had married the woman who accused him of rape, but her family allegedly began demanding money from him, which left him deeply troubled.
Suraj, originally from Ghaziabad, was working at a private firm in Faridabad. On June 15, 2021, he was named in a First Information Report (FIR) filed at the Kheri Pul police station. He was arrested a week later but had been granted interim bail on August 11. On the day of his death, Suraj had come to court for the hearing of his regular bail plea.
After the hearing, Suraj appeared visibly disturbed, his parents said. While they were standing a short distance away, Suraj jumped from the court building. He was rushed to the hospital by police, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Suraj’s father alleged that the woman’s parents had demanded ₹5 lakh initially, which later increased to ₹10 lakh and then ₹15 lakh. These demands had left their son emotionally shattered. Despite this, Suraj’s family chose not to file a complaint against the woman or her family.
Inspector Virender Khatri, SHO of the Central Police Station, confirmed the incident. He stated, “We have not received any complaint from the deceased’s family yet. The body will be handed over to the family after the post-mortem.”
This case highlights the devastating impact of unresolved financial and legal disputes, underlining the need for mental health support in such situations.
