Maggi Case: Couple Divorces After Husband Complains About Wife’s Noodles-Only Cooking
Maggi noodles, a beloved food in most households, recently became the unlikely reason for a divorce in Mysuru. A man filed for divorce from his wife, claiming she could only cook Maggi and prepared it for every meal, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
This unusual “Maggi case” was shared by Principal District and Sessions Court Judge, ML Raghunath, during his time as a district judge in Ballari. According to the judge, the husband complained that his wife would visit the grocery store and purchase only instant noodles.
The couple eventually divorced by mutual consent. Raghunath also discussed how divorce cases are increasing at an alarming rate. He pointed out that some divorce petitions are even filed on the very day of the wedding, with issues ranging from minor disagreements—like not talking to the partner or choosing the wrong wedding suit color—to more serious issues, like lack of attention or poor communication.
Raghunath noted, “Divorce cases have been rising dramatically. If there were no law requiring couples to stay together for at least a year before seeking a divorce, petitions might be filed right from the wedding halls.”
He also mentioned that most divorce cases involve psychological issues rather than physical ones. While many couples reunite, the emotional scars often remain. Out of 800-900 matrimonial cases, only about 20-30 are successfully resolved. In a recent Lok Adalat, 32 of the 110 divorce cases saw a reunion.
This case highlights how trivial matters, like cooking habits, are contributing to the rising divorce rate in today’s society.
