Ludhiana Man Sets Himself on Fire After Fake Dowry Case Threat by Daughter-in-Law
A tragic incident took place in Ludhiana, Punjab, where a 60-year-old man died after setting himself on fire. He was reportedly threatened by his daughter-in-law and her family with a fake dowry harassment case. The man took this extreme step at his home in Guru Gobind Singh Nagar, Noorwala Road, on August 21, 2021, and passed away two days later while receiving treatment.
According to the man’s wife, the daughter-in-law and her parents had been constantly abusing and humiliating them. She claimed they assaulted her husband and threatened to file a false dowry case against the family.
The victim’s wife said the harassment started shortly after their son got married about one and a half years ago. The couple has a six-month-old daughter. She mentioned that after the elderly couple suffered injuries in an accident three months ago, the daughter-in-law and her parents became more abusive and aggressive.
On the day of the incident, after being physically and emotionally abused, the man returned home, poured kerosene on himself, and set himself on fire. Though he was rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries on August 23.
Basti Jodhewal Station House Officer (SHO), Mohammad Jamil, confirmed that the accused have been booked under IPC sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention). Police are currently working to arrest those involved.
