60-Year-Old Ludhiana Man Dies by Suicide After Dowry Harassment Threats by Daughter-in-Law

A tragic incident unfolded in Ludhiana where a 60-year-old man allegedly set himself on fire after being threatened with a false dowry harassment case by his daughter-in-law. The man took this extreme step on August 21, 2021, at his home in Guru Gobind Singh Nagar, Noorwala Road. He passed away two days later, on August 23.

According to reports, the elderly man had been facing harassment from his daughter-in-law and her parents, who threatened to file a fake dowry harassment case against him. His wife revealed that the threats and humiliation by their son’s in-laws drove him to take his own life.

She added that the daughter-in-law had been abusive ever since she got married, approximately one and a half years ago. Tensions escalated after the man refused to move to a separate residence, as demanded by his daughter-in-law. In retaliation, she and her parents allegedly assaulted him and continued their harassment.

Devastated by the ongoing abuse, the man poured kerosene on himself and set himself ablaze. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he could not survive his injuries. The police have booked the daughter-in-law and her parents under Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 34 (acts done by several persons with common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Efforts are underway to apprehend the accused.
