Johnny Depp May Not Ask Amber Heard to Pay $10.35 Million, Says His Lawyer
In the famous defamation case between Hollywood stars Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, a Virginia jury recently ruled in favor of Depp. The jury decided Heard must pay Depp $15 million in damages for harming his reputation, while Depp was ordered to pay $2 million to Heard. Due to Virginia’s law on limits for punitive damages, the amount Heard owes was later reduced to $10.35 million.
However, Depp’s lawyer, Benjamin Chew, has suggested that Amber Heard may not have to pay that money after all.
In an interview on Good Morning America, Chew was asked if Depp would agree to a deal where Heard doesn’t appeal in exchange for Depp giving up the damages. Chew hinted that such a settlement was possible.
He said, “We obviously can’t share private conversations between lawyer and client, but as Mr. Depp said during the trial, this was never about money. It was about clearing his name—and he has achieved that.”
Amber Heard’s lawyer, Elaine Bredehoft, also shared in a separate interview that Heard cannot afford to pay such a large amount.
After the verdict, Judge Penney Azcarate said she would not make the jury’s decision official until June 24, giving both sides time to decide if they want to settle the case privately.
If both Depp and Heard agree on a settlement before June 24, the judge may approve it instead of officially recording the damages decision made by the jury.
