Guwahati Woman Kills Husband and Mother-in-Law, Stores Bodies in Fridge, Dumps Them in Meghalaya

Guwahati: In a shocking case similar to the Shraddha Walkar murder in Delhi, a woman from Guwahati has been arrested for killing her husband and mother-in-law, chopping their bodies into pieces, and storing them in a refrigerator.

The accused, Bandana Kalita, confessed to the murders during police interrogation. The gruesome crime took place in August 2022, but the truth only came to light seven months later, on February 19, 2023.

According to the police, Bandana murdered her husband Amarjyoti Dey and mother-in-law Shankari Dey with the help of her lover Dhanjit Deka and another friend Arup Deka.

On August 17, Bandana and Arup allegedly killed Shankari Dey at her home in Chandmari. They then cut the body into pieces and stored it in a fridge. A few days later, on August 21, Bandana and her lover Dhanjit killed her husband Amarjyoti by strangling him. His body was also chopped into pieces and kept in polythene bags.

Later, with help from Arup, the group drove to Dawki in Meghalaya and dumped the body parts in the deep valleys near Cherrapunji.

After committing the murders, Bandana returned to clean the house and burned mattresses and clothes to hide evidence. Neighbours said they saw smoke from her terrace on that day.

Bandana had earlier filed a missing person complaint with the Noonmati Police, claiming her husband and mother-in-law were missing. Later, she accused Shankari Dey’s brother of stealing money from her bank accounts. However, during the investigation, police found that Bandana had withdrawn ₹5 lakh from Shankari’s account using her ATM card.

This led to growing suspicion, and Bandana was arrested on February 17. During questioning, she finally confessed to the entire crime.

Bandana had been living with her parents in Panikhaiti, Guwahati, after the murders. Police have also arrested Dhanjit Deka and Arup Deka, and all three are currently in police custody.

This horrifying case has shocked the people of Assam and sparked comparisons with other high-profile crimes in India.
