Gujarat Dentist Sentenced to Life for Killing Brother and Baby Niece
In a shocking incident from Gujarat, a 28-year-old dentist, Kinnari Patel, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Patan court for the murder of her 32-year-old brother, Jigar Patel, and his 14-month-old daughter, Mahi. The motive behind the crime was a family property dispute and resentment towards her sister-in-law.
Along with the life sentence, the court also fined Kinnari ₹50,000. It recommended compensation for Jigar’s wife, Bhumi, under the Gujarat government’s support scheme.
How the Crime Happened
The incident occurred in May 2019. According to the case:
- On May 5, while traveling to their native village Kalana, Kinnari gave Jigar a drink mixed with dhatura seeds, a toxic substance. As he fell sick, she forced a cyanide pill into his mouth. When he tried to reach for his car keys to get help, she hid them. He died shortly after, and she later disposed of the car keys in Ahmedabad.
- On May 25, she gave her sister-in-law glucose water mixed with dhatura, making her sick. While Bhumi was away for treatment, Kinnari put cyanide powder into baby Mahi’s mouth, leading to her death.
Investigation and Court Proceedings
The Patel family is from Siddhpur, Kalana. There was ongoing tension between Kinnari and her brother over the family property. Their father, an industrialist, grew suspicious and filed a complaint after the unusual deaths.
A fresh autopsy on Jigar’s body confirmed cyanide poisoning. Though Kinnari confessed to the crime during the police investigation, she later denied it in court. Still, the court found her guilty based on strong circumstantial evidence.
Kinnari’s lawyer has announced plans to appeal the verdict in the Gujarat High Court.
