The Bombay High Court has ruled that a father cannot refuse to provide maintenance to his daughter based on her glamorous social media pictures. The court emphasized that such photos do not necessarily reflect her financial independence or actual earnings.
This decision came during a case where the family court had ordered the father to pay ₹25,000 as maintenance for his daughter, who had reached adulthood. The father challenged the order, claiming his daughter was a model earning ₹72-80 lakh per month, as indicated by her social media presence.
However, Justice Bharti Dangre dismissed the father’s argument, agreeing with the family court’s view that social media images cannot be used as proof of financial independence. The court noted that young people often post glossy pictures online, which may not accurately represent their financial situation.
Without concrete evidence of the daughter’s income, the court upheld the maintenance order, reiterating that assumptions based on social media cannot override legal responsibilities.
