Kiren Rijiju Urges States to Set Up Family Courts in Every District

Union Minister for Law and Justice, Kiren Rijiju, has urged all states to establish family courts in districts with populations exceeding 10 lakh. Speaking in Parliament, Rijiju stressed that cases handled in family courts are highly sensitive and require careful resolution.

This statement came during the Lok Sabha discussion on the Family Courts Amendment Bill, which has already been passed.

Current Status of Family Courts in India

Rijiju presented data showing that India currently has 715 family courts, with 11,49,907 cases pending as of April 31. The country comprises 773 districts, and between April and May, 69,464 new cases were registered in family courts.

Upcoming Review of Family Court Functioning

The Minister announced a review of the current situation during a conference scheduled for July 30, where the Chief Justice of India, the Prime Minister, and district judges from across the country will deliberate on issues related to family courts.

“We recently held a conference with the Chief Justices of all High Courts and senior Supreme Court judges to address important judicial matters, including the functioning of family courts,” Rijiju stated.

Emphasis on Mediation and Technology

Rijiju highlighted the importance of using mediation and technology to expedite family court cases. He revealed that a Mediation Bill is in the works and emphasized free district legal aid counseling through the National Legal Services Authority.

“Most family and commercial disputes can be resolved effectively through mediation. The government is focusing on ensuring sensitive and efficient resolution of family court cases,” he added.

By ensuring family courts in every district, Rijiju aims to make the judicial process more accessible and efficient for citizens dealing with sensitive family disputes.
