Delhi – A man who was falsely accused of raping two minor girls has been acquitted by a Delhi court, which also ordered the state to pay him ₹1 lakh in compensation for the trauma he faced.
The case, registered in 2015 under the POCSO Act, accused the man of repeatedly sexually assaulting his neighbor’s daughters. However, District and Sessions Judge Dharmesh Sharma found strong evidence suggesting the allegations were fabricated. The accused, a Dalit, stated in court that the children’s parents bore a grudge against him due to regular disputes—particularly because their dogs used to defecate near his home.
Judge Sharma observed that the children had been tutored to falsely accuse the man and that the real reason behind the complaint was caste hatred. He described the case as a shameful misuse of the legal system, stating:
“It is our experience that people sometimes make false accusations for various reasons, including caste-based hatred, as seen in this case.”
The judge also pointed out severe failures in the police investigation, including the fact that the victims’ statements were not recorded by a woman officer, as required under law. The Investigating Officer (IO) was criticized for not being fair or neutral.
“This case appears to be the result of heavy tutoring by the parents to frame the accused. It is a sinister and shameless act,” the judge said in his verdict dated August 7.
Calling the ₹1 lakh amount a “symbolic compensation”, the court directed the Delhi government to pay it within two months, recognizing the long mental, emotional, and social suffering caused to the falsely accused man.
The judgment highlights the growing concern of false rape allegations and the misuse of legal protections, especially when caste discrimination plays a role in targeting individuals.
