Innocent Engineering Student Spends 7 Years in Jail After False Rape Allegation
In a shocking case from Chennai, an engineering student was falsely accused of rape in 2010 and ended up spending 7 years in jail before being found innocent.
The issue began when two families, who had plans to get their children married, had a disagreement over property. After the fallout, the woman’s family accused the young man of getting their daughter pregnant and refusing to marry her.
Based on this accusation, he was arrested and spent 95 days in custody before being granted bail. By then, in February 2010, the woman had already given birth. A DNA test later proved that the man was not the father of the child.
Despite the DNA evidence, the case continued in court. It took six years before a Mahila court in Chennai finally acquitted the student in 2016, stating that he was innocent from the beginning.
As a result of the false case, the man spent seven precious years behind bars. The court awarded him a compensation of ₹15 lakh for the wrongful imprisonment and damage caused to his life and career.
This case highlights the importance of proper investigation and the serious impact that false accusations can have on innocent lives.
