A senior executive, Amit Kumar, took his own life in his Gurgaon home on Tuesday morning (August 30) after being accused of sexual harassment during a workplace meeting. The 41-year-old executive was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his Sector 9 home, leaving behind a four-page suicide note.
In his final note, Amit expressed regret to his wife and son, writing, “I am sorry for my wife and son for leaving them alone. Today I was humiliated with sexual harassment allegations in the meeting.” His wife has since accused his colleagues and the company of abetment to suicide. The couple has a 5-year-old son.
The tragic incident occurred after a female colleague accused Amit of sexual harassment on Thursday, leading to a confrontation at work. Unable to handle the humiliation, Amit ended his life. His note stated, “I never gave special treatment to any employee. I treated every employee equally. Whatever I am doing is due to allegations in the office. My family and relatives are not involved in this.”
Amit had been working at Optum Global Solutions, a company that provides digital healthcare services, for just a month and a half. His family members were unaware of the stress he was under, although his colleagues mentioned that tensions had been rising at work over the past week.
His cousin, Mohit, shared that Amit had not shown any signs of distress during a recent visit. “We had no idea he was going through this. His colleagues said something had been going on at the office, but he never mentioned anything to us,” Mohit said. Amit’s wife also revealed that on Tuesday morning, a colleague called to inform her that Amit had sent a message saying he was about to end his life. She rushed upstairs and tragically found him hanging.
An FIR has been registered against the company and the colleagues involved under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code. The police have started an investigation and have called in handwriting experts to examine the suicide note. The company has not yet made any public statement regarding the incident.
The investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge.
