Delhi HC Denies Bail to Mother and Grandmother Accused of Assaulting Son-in-Law
The Delhi High Court recently rejected the bail plea of a woman’s mother and grandmother, accused of abducting and attacking her husband and allegedly mutilating his private parts.
The case involved Raman, who married Menka without their families’ consent. After the couple returned to Delhi following their marriage on December 22, 2021, Menka’s family threatened Raman’s life.
While seeking protection at the Rajouri Garden Police Station, the couple was attacked by Menka’s brothers and uncles on their way home. They were forcibly taken to Menka’s family residence in Sagarpur.
According to police reports, Menka’s 86-year-old grandmother, Kaushalya, allegedly instigated the assault, stating that Raman did not deserve mercy and encouraging family members to mutilate him. It was also revealed that Kaushalya had 42 criminal cases against her.
Menka’s mother, Geeta, was accused of assaulting Raman and declared a proclaimed offender early in the proceedings. A third accused, Menka’s sister Naina Rana, was also implicated but later granted bail, as the Court found no active role attributed to her.
Justice Anoop Kumar Mendiratta observed that Geeta and Kaushalya actively participated in the assault and could not be granted bail. The Court also emphasized the police’s failure to act promptly on the couple’s initial protection plea, calling their inaction “deplorable.”
The Court directed the Delhi Police Commissioner to ensure police personnel are trained to handle such sensitive cases. The police have four weeks to submit a report on measures taken.
