Indian Government Begins Major Reform of IPC, CrPC, and Evidence Act

Indian Government Starts Reform of IPC, CrPC, and Indian Evidence Act for Better Justice

The Government of India has started the process to bring major reforms in the country’s criminal laws. This includes changes to the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act. The aim is to create a faster, affordable, and people-centric justice system.

On Wednesday, Union Minister of State for Home, Ajay Kumar Mishra, informed the Rajya Sabha that the Ministry of Home Affairs is consulting with a wide range of stakeholders to ensure the reforms are inclusive and effective.

The government has requested suggestions from:

  • Governors
  • Chief Ministers
  • Lieutenant Governors
  • Administrators of Union Territories
  • Chief Justice of India and Chief Justices of High Courts
  • Bar Council of India and State Bar Councils
  • Law universities and institutes
  • All Members of Parliament (MPs)

Mr. Mishra noted that the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs, in its 146th report, emphasized the need for a complete review of the criminal justice system.

To lead this reform, a committee has been formed under the Vice Chancellor of National Law University, Delhi. This expert group is tasked with suggesting necessary updates and improvements to India’s criminal laws.

The Minister said:

“The government is fully committed to bringing a new and comprehensive law based on the recommendations of the committee and feedback from all stakeholders.”

These reforms are expected to modernize India’s legal framework, reduce delays, and ensure justice is more accessible to every citizen.
