Kerala Unveils India’s First Child-Friendly Family Court

India’s first child-friendly Family Court was inaugurated in Kozhikode, Kerala, on Wednesday. Named “Swapnakoodu,” meaning “nest of dreams,” this new court represents a collaborative effort between the Calicut Judiciary and the Calicut Bar Association Committee, 2022.

Principal District and Sessions Judge S. Krishnakumar inaugurated the court during an event led by MS Saji, President of the Calicut Bar Association.

Justices A Muhamed Mustaque and CS Dias had previously recommended a report from the Registrar (District Judiciary) on implementing child-friendly rooms in Family Courts. They noted that many Family Courts operate in leased spaces with inadequate facilities, often lacking waiting areas for children who come to the courts for visitation rights or interim custody. In some cases, children and families wait in crowded corridors or outside for extended periods, which negatively impacts young minds and their perception of the justice system.

The Supreme Court has also highlighted the importance of making Family Courts more accommodating for children.

The new court has been specially designed to reduce the stress and trauma for children involved in custody and matrimonial cases. The court features artwork from Sunil Ashokapuram and Nisha Ravindran to enhance the environment and provide a more comforting space for young visitors.
